SELMA CURRIE
Selma Currie is an educator, financial expert, and entrepreneur with over 11 years of experience in New York City public schools. She holds a Master of Science in Special Education and began her career as a paraprofessional from 2014 to 2021 before transitioning into a special education teaching role. Her journey from paraprofessional to teacher has equipped her with a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities within the education system.
During her years as a paraprofessional, Selma provided critical classroom support, facilitated small group instruction, and contributed to creating an inclusive learning environment for students with special needs. She also served as a paraprofessional representative, advocating for her colleagues and ensuring they had access to the resources and support necessary to thrive in their roles. Her leadership and advocacy laid the groundwork for her continued commitment to union service and professional development.
Outside of her work in education, Selma is the founder of “Bxtch I’m Budgeting” and “My Accountability Bestie,” platforms through which she has helped thousands of women pay off debt, save money, and build investment portfolios. Her expertise in financial literacy and her entrepreneurial spirit highlight her dedication to empowering others, particularly educators and paraprofessionals, to achieve financial stability and freedom.
Selma is running for Assistant Treasurer with A Better Contract UFT because she believes that financial literacy is a critical component of a secure and prosperous future for union members. She is committed to leading workshops on budgeting, debt management, investing, and retirement planning, providing educators with the tools and knowledge they need to make informed financial decisions. Her vision includes creating accessible financial resources and support systems that empower UFT members to build long-term financial security.
As Assistant Treasurer, Selma aims to bridge the gap between financial stability and financial freedom for educators. She understands firsthand the challenges of balancing financial responsibilities on an educator’s salary and is dedicated to fostering a transparent, member-driven union that prioritizes the financial well-being of its members. Through her leadership, Selma hopes to cultivate a culture of financial empowerment within the UFT, ensuring that every member has the confidence and support needed to achieve their financial goals and contribute to a stronger, more resilient union
