STEVE SWIECIKI

Steve is a dedicated Social Studies teacher with 15 years of experience in New York City public schools. Throughout his career, he has taught every core Social Studies course as well as a variety of electives and honors classes. His versatility in the classroom is matched by his steadfast commitment to unionism and advocacy for his colleagues.

Currently serving his third term as UFT Chapter Leader at Lehman High School in the Bronx, Steve has a proven track record of organizing his colleagues around critical contractual and quality-of-life issues. His leadership and collaborative approach earned his chapter the prestigious Ely Trachtenberg Award from the UFT in 2024, recognizing their collective efforts to improve workplace conditions and support educators.

Steve’s union experience is extensive and diverse. He has worked as a PM staffer for the Bronx Borough Office, assisting his District Representative in superintendent consultations and other key initiatives. His role as a borough liaison and arbitration advocate in the Grievance Department provided him with invaluable experience representing members who had been wronged by the Department of Education (DOE). Through this work, he learned from some of the brightest minds in the UFT, honing his skills in advocacy and negotiation.

His union activism also includes contributing to the successful 2017 campaign against an anti-union New York State Constitutional Convention and the 2018 outreach campaign that encouraged members to remain with the union following the Janus decision. During the pandemic, Steve took on the critical task of assessing school compliance with safety protocols, including the implementation of MERV air filters, PPE availability, and adherence to safety guidelines.

Outside of his professional and union responsibilities, Steve enjoys spending time with family and friends, attending concerts and Mets games, and caring for his two rescue dogs, Cora and Maple.

Steve is running for Vice President of Academic High Schools on the A Better Contract slate because he believes the UFT is at a pivotal moment. He envisions a union that not only holds the DOE accountable but also fosters a more democratic culture within the UFT itself. His goal is to empower high school educators by activating, organizing, and equipping them to advocate for themselves. He is ready to bring his experience, passion, and leadership to the role, promising to hit the ground running on Day 1 and to be a strong voice for all high school members.
