ARTHUR GOLDSTEIN

Arthur Goldstein is a seasoned educator with over 40 years of experience teaching ESL, English, and occasionally Spanish, primarily at Francis Lewis High School. Since beginning his career in 1984, Arthur has dedicated himself to both his students and his colleagues, consistently advocating for strong union representation and a member-driven approach to leadership. He continues to work at Francis Lewis High School several days a week, maintaining his close connection to the classroom and the challenges educators face daily.

Arthur served as UFT Chapter Leader at Francis Lewis High School for 12 years, where he earned a reputation as a tireless advocate for teachers’ rights and professional respect. His leadership extended to the UFT Executive Board, where he served for six years, contributing to policy discussions and initiatives that strengthened union power. Last year, Arthur was elected Vice-Chair of the RTC Chapter, further demonstrating his enduring commitment to union service.

In addition to his union leadership roles, Arthur is an accomplished writer whose education columns have appeared in prominent publications including the New York Daily News, the New York Post, Chalkbeat, the Huffington Post, and more. He currently writes the “Union Matters” column on Substack, offering insights into union dynamics, educational policy, and the importance of active, engaged union membership.

Arthur is running for Assistant Secretary as part of A Better Contract UFT because he believes the union must return to its roots as a democratic, member-driven, and activist organization. He envisions a union that amplifies member voices, prioritizes transparent communication, and mobilizes the strength of its membership to achieve real gains. Arthur emphasizes the need to break away from unnecessary concessions and to build genuine union power through collective action.

Having worked closely with Amy Arundell during his tenure as a chapter leader, Arthur has seen firsthand her unwavering support for all members, regardless of union politics. He believes in building a union that listens to its members, answers their calls, and ensures they are informed and empowered to influence decisions that impact their professional lives.

Arthur’s vision for the UFT includes a shift away from top-down governance toward a more inclusive and responsive structure. He advocates for a union focused on bread-and-butter issues, free from partisan politics or divisive ideologies, and driven by the real needs of educators and paraprofessionals. His extensive experience, combined with his passion for authentic unionism, makes him a powerful advocate for a stronger, more democratic UFT.
