PAUL EGAN
Paul Egan has vast experience as a UFT leader. He is a seasoned Social Studies teacher and dedicated union advocate with a career spanning three decades in New York City public schools. Currently, Paul teaches at PS/MS 194 in District 11 in the Bronx, where he also serves as UFT Chapter Leader. He began his teaching career at MS 113 in 1994 and has since built a reputation as a leader who bridges the gap between the classroom and union leadership.
Paul’s union experience is extensive and multifaceted. He was a longtime Chapter Leader at MS 113 before becoming a Special Representative in the Bronx UFT, managing grievances and advocating for educators. His leadership expanded as he took on the role of District Representative for the 45 schools of District 11, providing direct support and guidance to union members.
For a decade, Paul served as the UFT Political Director, where he played a critical role in increasing COPE contributions and mobilizing political action among members. His strategic efforts helped elect education-friendly candidates at the federal, state, and city levels. Paul was instrumental in securing a “No” vote on the New York State Constitutional Convention, a key victory in protecting union members’ pensions.
Paul also led as Director of Chapter Organizing and Development, where he oversaw all Chapter Leader trainings and launched the Chapter Advocate program. This initiative strengthened chapter leadership by organizing and empowering members at the school level, enhancing the union’s grassroots impact.
Returning to the classroom in recent years, Paul gained valuable insights into the disconnect between union leadership and school-based members. This experience reinforced his belief that the UFT must refocus on being a vital and supportive part of every educator’s work life. He advocates for a union that not only protects its members but also engages them as active participants in building better working conditions, benefits, and pensions.
Paul is running for Secretary with A Better Contract UFT because he believes in a new approach that prioritizes member-driven initiatives and fosters a strong, responsive union. His vision is to transform the UFT into a powerhouse that not only advocates for educators but also collaborates closely with school communities to create lasting, positive change for both staff and students.
